What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Utilizing Solar Energy?
Nowadays, there
is a heightened awareness to being "green"
or doing things the environment-friendly way.
In everything that you do, there is a way
to finish the task in such a way that will
not harm the environment – from washing
your clothes, to packaging your grocery items
to driving your car. Due to the ill effects
of global warming, people from all over the
world are becoming more and more concerned
about the way that they do things which may
harm the environment. If the trend continues,
the feared negative effects of global warming
may just be reversed before it is too late.
As part of the campaign to save the Earth
from grave danger, the use of renewable energy
source is encouraged. There is no better way
to do this than by using solar energy, which
is the best renewable energy on Earth. Solar
energy utilizes the power and light from the
sun to provide energy for a wide array of
applications where electricity is being used.
Instead of using expensive fuel in power plants,
alternative energy sources are now being harnessed,
and solar energy is the primary candidate
of being the best among all of them.
The question is, are there any disadvantages
to utilizing the power of the sun for our
energy needs? First of all, here are the
advantages of using solar energy. The number
one benefit of making use of solar energy
is that it is renewable. Since this form of
energy is coming from the heat and light of
the sun, there is virtually an unlimited supply.
Another advantage of using solar energy is
that it is extremely environmentally friendly.
Unlike fuel-powered power plants, using solar
energy produces little or no pollution at
all. Greenhouse effect is also lessened with
the use of solar energy panels for heating
purposes.
Utilizing solar energy is also extremely cost-effective.
When you have your house built, a solar panel
is probably one of the best investments that
you will ever make. Aside from the initial
costs of installation of the solar panel,
you will spend virtually nothing because the
energy that will be 'gathered' by the solar
panel will be coming a natural resource which
is the sun. Thus, you will be saving enough
power to use for your lighting or heating
needs. From solar cells, solar furnaces to
solar-powered satellite systems – the
possibilities are endless when it comes to
the multitude of applications of solar energy.
On the downside, solar energy cannot be used
by those who are living in countries or states
where there is a limited amount of sunshine
for most part of the year. Also, building
a solar energy plant on a large-scale basis
would require a huge land area. Finally, since
there are some areas where there is not enough
sunshine to suitably produce the solar energy
that they need, the commercial viability is
still questionable.
However, the advantages still far outweigh
the disadvantages when it comes to using solar
energy – so it is still a good alternative
energy source in the long run.
